My Initial Idea
My first idea is to make a music video along with a CD cover and poster to represent the artist. There are many different genres of music such as pop, rock, alternative, indie, soul, , however I intend to follow the 'pop' genre. I am going to analysis different examples of pop videos to gain an understanding of the conventions in which separate 'pop' videos to any other genre.
Jamie T - Sticks 'n' Stones. How does the pop video appeal to its audience?
At the start of the music video you see Jamie T walking down a ‘normal’ street, this conveys that he is just normal and like the people who will be watching his video which will appeal to them more. Similarly he is dressed in l casual clothes, again portraying him as a normal day to day man. This is emphasised by the clown as its bright outstanding clothes contrast with Jamie T’s. The clown also adds an ironic message as the clown looks sad and grumpy portraying that there is more to Jamie T; it’s not one dimensional which would appeal to his audience as he is an interesting character.
The location of the video is in the London in the suburbs, this creates a casual tone for the music video. The group of boys are seen running down a ‘dirty’ alley way ‘to find trouble’ you see them having a laugh and enjoying themselves, this conveys the boys to be the typical ‘laddish’ boys going out which would appeal to their audience as they would almost admire Jamie for being so ‘normal’. Another location is a back garden of a council estate where all the boys are having a laugh in the garden. The iconography portrays they are working class whilst also being proud of it, this would appeal to the audience as they would feel on the same level as Jamie and be able to identify with him. This is reinforced by the quick cutting of distinct urban locations which enable to audience to identify where they are.
The boys are seen walking down the street drinking beer from cans in the middle of the day which conveys them as troublesome and hard to control; like they don’t care what people think of them. This is the image which most teenagers want therefore appealing to their intended audience directly. This is reinforced when they spray the beer around on each other. They also chuck the beer cans at what looks like the camera and smashing it, however it’s a glass sheet put it front of the camera which enables the video to look ‘homemade’ portraying that they are carefree and don’t care which would appeal to their intended audience.
Throughout the whole video the group of lads are shown together having a laugh and getting into trouble, it adds to Jamie’s image of being carefree and rebellious. However within the group Jamie is always at the front and in the centre, showing him to be popular and well liked, again targeting the intended audience as teenagers like the popular rebellious figures. At the end of the video the group of boys are seen in an dark empty car park letting off flares, this shows them as again being rebellious and having a laugh doing what they want, when they want, which is what most teenagers wish they could do, therefore targeting there audience.
There are typical conventions of a music video which are the links between the lyrics and visuals; you hear the lyrics ‘Sticks and Stones’ and while Jamie is singing it you see him and his friends chuck stones at the glass screen, while portraying them as carefree it also allows the conventions to be added making it look like a music video. However Jamie lip synchs some of the song, then stops half way through a line to laugh of speak to his ‘friends’ this makes the video look much more relaxed and smooth, conveying him as how he wants appealing to the intended audience.
